14.A. RECOGNIZING MRS. ROBERTA TRAYLOR HAGEN ON THE OCCASION OF HER 100TH BIRTHDAY

Mr. Kappel introduced Mrs. Roberta Hagen who was present to receive the resolution.

On motion of the Board, the following resolution was adopted:

WHEREAS, Chesterfield County is committed to all our residents, especially the younger members and the "more mature" members of our communities; and

WHEREAS, On December 25, 2002, Mrs. Roberta "Bena" Traylor Hagen, turned 100 years old; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Hagen was born on Christmas Day, 1902 in a house on Harrowgate Road in Chester; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Hagen was one of eight children; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Hagen was not expected to survive long after her birth; and

WHEREAS, all those who expected Ms. Hagen not to survive have since passed on, and Mrs. Hagen is still going strong; and

WHEREAS; after marrying Charles Hagen, Mrs. Hagen lived on Richmond Street in Chester; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Hagen is the matriarch of her family, and has for all these years imparted her wisdom, experience and advice; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Hagen is an inspiration to her family, friends, and all who know her.

WHEREAS, such longevity is worthy of appropriate recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors, this 12th day of February 2003, publicly recognizes Mrs. Roberta "Bena" Traylor Hagen as one of Chesterfield County's noteworthy individuals, congratulates her on having achieved centenarian status, and wishes her continued health and happiness.

AND, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Hagen and that this resolution be permanently recorded among the papers of this Board of Supervisors of Chesterfield County, Virginia.

Ayes: Warren, McHale, Barber, Humphrey and Miller.

Nays: None.

Mr. Barber and Mr. McHale presented the executed resolution to Mrs. Hagen, accompanied by several members of her family, and stated that the county is blessed to have such a noteworthy citizen.

Mr. Bill Goodwyn, nephew of Mrs. Hagen expressed appreciation to the Board for recognizing his aunt, stating that she has been an extremely hard worker over the years and always set a good example for the young people of Chester.

Roberta Traylor "Nana" Hagen, age 102, long time resident of Chesterfield County and widow of Charles P. Hagen, former assistant superintendent of the Virginia Methodist Children's Home, passed away Monday, January 17, 2005. She was born December 25, 1902 on High Street in Petersburg, a home on the National Historic Register. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Louise Taylor and Roberta Ann Greenawalt and husband, Kenneth of Richmond; four grandchildren, Gene S. Taylor, Susan T. Headley, David P. Greenawalt and Steven D. Greenawalt. Mrs. Hagen was a charter member of Reveille United Methodist Church and was a graduate of Smith Deal-Massie Business College. Her first job was at the Chesterfield County Courthouse, where she worked for Mr. Walter Perdue, who was the clerk of the court. She was co-owner of the Floor Mart. Remains rest at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday. Interment Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Reveille United Methodist Church.
