Robert Eugene Baney, of Hudson, Florida, passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at the age of 78. Mr. Baney was born in Lemoyne, PA on December 19, 1930, the son of the late Samuel Herman Baney and Mabel Shover of Portland Street in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
He attended Mechanicsburg High School and graduated in the Class of 1948. During his high school career he played varsity basketball and was selected as All-State Tenor for his proficiency in and love of singing. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he was an Aviation Metal Smith First Class aboard the aircraft carrier USS Tarawa during the Korean War. In addition to his duties he utilized his exceptional singing talent to entertain the troops performing in USO shows with such greats as Gene Kelly.
After an honorable discharge, he pursued a career in the jet aircraft engine component industry working for TRW in the Quality Engineering and Quality Management field and later for Howmet Corporation as Plant Manager of two manufacturing facilities. His particular expertise was the development and qualification of maprocesses for producing jet engine blades and vanes. After retirement, Mr. Baney acted as a consultant for a variety of jet aircraft component manufacturers all over the world, troubleshooting and resolving manufacturing process problems as well as developing and implementing business management systems to improve quality.
Mr. Baney was an avid golfer playing the game in excess of 60 years. During that time he twice achieved hole-in-ones. During full retirement, he played golf 5-6 times a week. He truly loved the game and shared his knowledge of the game with all.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Ray of Hudson, Florida; his sons: Robert S. Baney, of Bloomsburg, PA; Stephen E. Baney of Mechanicsburg, PA; Roger W. Baney of Bath, PA; step daughter, Marilyn Knight of Novi, Michigan; 8 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren, and 5 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his half brother, Keith Baney.
At his request, no memorial services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that in Bob's memory and honor, any donations or contributions be sent to the American Cancer Society.
