Algie B. Daughtrey, Jr.Virginia Beach
Algie Breckenridge Daughtrey, Jr. 92, passed away July 18, 2013 at Sentara Leigh Hospital. He was born in Norfolk, VA and was the son of the late Algie B. Daughtrey, Sr. and Alice K. Daughtrey.
Mr. Daughtrey was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving his country during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was retired from Norfolk Southern Corporation. He was a former member and past president of the Norfolk-Portsmouth Traffic Club and a former board member of the Norfolk Southern Employees' Credit Union, serving for 34 years in various capacities including chairman. He was a member of Thalia United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, and was active with, and a past president of, the Methodist Men. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Eleanor Daughtrey and Louise Councill and a brother, Edward Daughtrey. Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Martha A. Daughtrey, two sons, R. Breckenridge Daughtrey and his wife Robin and Lawrence A. Daughtrey and his wife Cathy, grandchildren Ben and Annie Daughtrey of Great Falls, Virginia; a sister, Alice Patterson Councill; a sister-in-law, Mary Daughtrey and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Laskin Road Chapel Monday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. A church service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Thalia United Methodist Church, 4321 Virginia Beach Blvd. A reception will follow the service. Burial will be private at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
The family wishes to extend thanks to Mr. Daughtrey's caregivers who assisted him over the past two years, and to his neighbors who looked out for and visited him. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Thalia United Methodist or to one's charity of choice. Online condolences may be made to the family at hdoliver.com
