Edward Lawrence Daughtrey Sr., 69, affectionately known as "Muffin" to his family, passed away July 16, 2002.
A native of Norfolk, he was born Jan. 11, 1933, the son of Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Daughtrey Sr. After graduating from Virginia Tech in 1956, he began serving his country both in active duty and in the Naval Reserves, where he was assigned to Naval Intelligence and reached the rank of commander. Ed spent 31 years of his life devoted to the Norfolk Public School System and the students of Norfolk. He began his teaching career at Northside Junior High School, served as the coordinator of various instructional programs throughout the city, was principal of Willard Junior High School and the Norfolk Technical Vocational Center and served as the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction prior to his retirement in 1990.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Mary Ainsley Daughtrey of Chesapeake; a daughter and two sons, Deborah Carol Porter and husband Steve of Orange Park, Fla., Ted and wife Nancy Brown Daughtrey of Norfolk and John Stuart Daughtrey of Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, A.B. Daughtrey Jr. and wife Martha of Virginia Beach; a sister, Alice Council and her husband Clifton of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Ainsley, Ashleigh, Brooks, Christopher and Tyler; several nieces and nephews and his beloved horse and cat, Promise and Sunshine. He was predeceased by two sisters, Eleanor Lee Daughtrey and Louise Council, both formerly of Norfolk.
A private family graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ed's name to Strolling Silver Strings, c/o Maury High School, 322 Shirley Ave., Norfolk, VA 23517, to the Tidewater Winds, P.O. Box 12027, Norfolk, VA 23541-0027 or the Hickory United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2708 Battlefield Blvd. South, Chesapeake, VA 23322. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
