He was born December 2, 1860 and reared in and around this place and has spent nearly all his life in the dry goods business here...
He was born on a farm and worked hard at manual labor, but farming was too slow and monotonous for his nature and consequently, he left it and took a position with Jones & Griggs. From that he was an acknowledged successful handler of goods.
[... After a brief interlude with a similar firm in Leaksville, he returned to Ridgeway as a partner with his two Brothers-in-law, J. P. (James Price) and W. A. (William Allen) Garrett, General Merchandise.]
He bought the stock a short time later, moved into the old storehouse of Jones & Griggs and conducted the business there until the time of his death. He was a true friend, a perfect gentleman of the Old Virginia type and seemed to live to make others happy. No one ever lived in this community who had more friends...
