The Joel Montgomery family is listed in the1860, 1870, and 1880 Federal Census records of Franklin Co., Va.

The 1850 Federal Census for Franklin Co., Va. records Samuel Montgomery, age 57 with Elizabeth, age 57, Elizabeth (40), Elias (20), and Sarah (18) as neighbors of Andrew Montomery, age 32, Sarah (20), Mary M. (7), Henry (5), Michael (3), and
Owen (2). The 1860 census records Samuel and Andrew as neighbors to Joel Montogomery and family. All respective family members, and additons, are listed appropriately. The 1870 census does not list Samuel Montogomery; however, Elizabeth, age 78, is living in the home of Hannah Naff as a neighbor of Andrew and Joel. The 1880 census reecords Elizabeth, age 88, living with Joel and is listed as his mother. It is resonable to conclude that Samuel and Elizabeth are the parents of Joel Montgomery.

The 1900 Federal Census for Little Creek, Franklin Co., VA, District 29, page 132B, dated June 14, 1900 records Joel (Jan 1824 - VA/VA/VA) and Sarah (Aug 1828 - VA/VA/VA) Montgomery. Joel is a farmer and has been married to Sarah for 49 years. They have had 9 children of whom 7 are still living.

Joel married Sarah A. Brooks circa 1851 in Franklin Co., VA. (Sarah A. Brooks was born on 10 Aug 1828 in Virginia and died on 10 Jan 1913 in Little Creek District, Franklin Co., Virginia.)
