Gustave Adolph (Gus) Wetzel ¹²¹

  General Notes:

After his parents died, Gus was placed in Girard College (for fatherless boys) in Philadelphia, PA. His brother, George, and sister, Julia, were placed in The Home for Orphans of Odd Fellows. The 1910 Federal Census for Philadelphia, PA (ED#1209, page 127A) records Gustav A. Wetzel as a student at Girard located at South College and Corinthian Avenue. Both his parents are listed as being from Germany. The residence has some 1500 young men listed in this census.

The WWI Draft Registration Card for Gustav Wetzel dated June 5, 1917 lists his date of birth as September 23, 1895. He is living with his mother at 2012 Oxford Street in Philadelphia, PA and is employed as a Clerk with Bell Telephone. His physical description is tall in height and medium build with blue eyes and dark hair.

The 1930 Federal Census (Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan, ED# 758, page 215A) records a Gustave Wetzel (34) with wife Grace (29) and child David (5) living (renting) at 122 New Part Street. All three are listed as being born in Pennsylvania. The parents of Gustave and Grace are listed as born in Germany. The WWII Draft Registration Card (for men born on or after April 28, 1877 and on or before February 16, 1897) for Gustave Adolph Wetzel dated April 27, 1942 lists his date of birth as September 23, 1895 in Philadelphia, PA. He is living with his wife, Grace A. Wetzel, at 119-B, St. Laurence Road, Upper Darby, PA. He is working for The United States Treasury Department and his physical description is 5' 9 1/2", 185 lbs with blue eyes, brown hair and ruddy complexion.
