The 1850 Federal Census for Grayson Co., Va. (District 19, page 166B) records Charles Hale (38), his wife Jane (35) with children Fielden (m:16), Elvira (14), Orville (13), Creed (m: 12), Rosamond (6), Elizabeth (4), Johnson (2), and John (3/12). One page over on page 166A is Talitha Bourn (20) who is to marry Charles Hale some 15 hence. Talitha is living with her parents Martin (45) and Sally (47) Bourn and siblings Elbert (16), Florence (16), Julia Ann (14), Cynthia (12), Jesse (10), and Amanda (8)

The 1860 Federal Census for Grayson Co., Va. (Spring Valley P. O., page 57) records Charles Hail [Hale] (49) with his wife Rosamond M. (30) and children Rosanna (16), Betty (14), Johnson (12), Sarah A. (8), Lucy J. (3), and Charles R. (2). Charles has real estate valued at $5,000 and personal property at $4,995 which includes 2 slaves. Charles and family are living near several of the same families listed in the 1850 census.

The 1870 Federal Census for Elk Creek, Grayson Co., Va. (Independence, page 141) records Charles Hale (58), his wife? Tabitha (40) with children Lucy (13), Charles R. (12), and Charlotte (8). Also listed are Elbert (10), Flora (5), Ellen (2), Sally (13), and Amelia (14). They are living near several of the same families listed in the 1850/1860 census. It should be noted that the 1860 census records on page 60 Talitha Hail [Hale] (30) as a house keeper 3 pages over from Charles Hail on page 57 in the Spring Vally P. O. section of the county. She has children Susan (3), Sarah (3), and Amelia (5) Hail. Also in the household are Sarah Bourne (65) with Montgomery Bourn (28), Julia Bourn (21), and Amanda Bourn (18). Sarah Bourn has real estate valued at $8,000 and personal property at $10,900 which includes 9 slaves.

A book written by Laura Elizabeth Cutchshaw and published by the Grayson County Historical Society lists Charles with three wives: Jane Sutherland, Rosamond M. Comer, and Tabitha Bourne.

The 1880 Federal Census for Elk Creek, Grayson Co., VA, District 35, page 332B records Charles Hale (68), his wife Talitha (57) with children C. R. [Charles] (22 - son), E. M. [Elbert] (19 - son), F. V. [Flora] (14 - daughter), and S. E. [Ellen] (12 - daughter).

The 1900 Federal Census for Elk Creek, Grayson Co., VA, District 38, page 332B records the widow Talitha Hale (Jan 1830) living with her daughter, Scynthia E. [Scynthia Ellen] Ward (Jan 1868) and her husband Leonidas H. (March 1867) and children Charlie A. (Feb 1891), Ruth T. (July 1893), Ballard G. (March 1894),, and Leonidas H. (Feb 1896).

Charles married Jane Sutherland. (Jane Sutherland was born about 1815 in Grayson Co., VA. and died about 1852 in Grayson Co., VA..)

Charles next married Talitha Bourne. (Talitha Bourne was born in Jan 1830 in Grayson Co., VA. and died after 1900 in Elk Creek, Grayson Co., VA..)
