Sartain McComas ¹⁵⁵

  General Notes:

Sartain came to Ohio and married, according to family stories related by Robert F. Hill, a full or half Cherokee Indian (early 1800s). He is buried in the Melvin Family Cemetery in Coal Grove, Lawrence Co., Ohio (near Rock Camp).

The Ohio Land Records database from ancestry.com records Sartain McComas' land aquisitions at the Chillicothe Land Office on March 1, 1836 (41.97 acres), Aug. 8, 1837 (42. 27 acres), April 1, 1843 (41.59 acres), and Nov 1, 1846 (42,27 acres).

In 1880, Sartain is living with his recently married daughter, America, in Butler, Wayne Co., WV. His wife, Nancy, is not listed ... see general notes on his daughter, America McComas.

The 1870 Federal Census for Perry Township, Lawrence Co., Ohio, Ironton P. O., page 470A, dated July 2, 1870 records Sartain McComas (70 from Va.) with wife Nancy McComas (51 from Kentucky) and children Ferala McComas (12 - Ohio) and America J. McComas (9 - Ohio). Also in the house hold are Martha A. McComas (30 - Ohio), Nancy J. McComas (14 - Ohio), Ammon McComas (12 - Ohio), and John A. McComas (9 - Ohio). Also in the household is Samuel Wilson (19 - VA) who is Nancy's son by her first husband, Jackson Wilson ... see general notes on Sartain's wife, Nancy Likens Wilson. Sartain is a preacher and has real estate valued at $2,000 and a personal estate valued at $300.

The 1860 Federal Census for Mason Township, Lawrence Co., Ohio records Sartain McComas (indexed as Saston Mccommis at ancestry.com) (Farmer-59 from Tenn.) with wife Nancy McComas (41 from Va.) and children Mary [Polly] A. Wilson (18 from Kentucky), Lindsay Wilson (16 from Va.), James Wilson (14 from Va.), Elizabeth Wilson (12 from Va.), Samuel Wilson (10 from Ohio) and Feribe Wilson (2 from Ohio). In this census, Feribe is listed as a Wilson, however, Sartain married Nancy Wilson in 1855 and she should be listed as a McComas.

The 1850 Federal Census for Mason Township, Lawrence Co., Ohio, page 355B, dated Oct 8, 1850 records Sartain McCormas (sic) (48 from Tenn.) with wife Henrietta McCormas (48 from NC) with children Nancy McCormas (16 - Ohio), Emeretta McCormas (12 - Ohio), Rebecca McCormas (9 - Ohio), and Milton McCormas (10 - Ohio). Also in the household is James Howard (80 - NC) and Thomas Howard (22 - NC). Thomas is listed as insane. Sartain is a farmer with real estate valued at $800. Sartain next married Nancy Lycans on 22 Jan 1855 in Lawrence Co., Ohio.¹⁵⁷ (Nancy Lycans was born in Oct 1818 in Kentucky and died after 1900 in Lawrence Co., Ohio.)
