John's parents are Lawrence (ca 1800) and Betsie (ca 1815) Gardner in that they are living next to John and Caroline in the 1860 census for Southampton Co., Va. John (19) is listed as a son of Lawrence (50) and Bettie (30-not John's mother at that age, but she is listed as 45 in the 1860 census) Gardner in the 1850 U.S. Census, Virginia, Southampton, Nottaway Parish, page 332B ).
The 1850 Federal Census for Southampton Co., Va. records Lawrence (50) and Bettie (30) Gardner with Cherry (20), John (19), Tabitha (17), Martha (14), Mary (12), John O. (9), Solomon (8), Munda (6), Bettie (2), and Margaret (1).

The 1860 Federal Census for Southampton Co., Va. records Lawrence (60) and Betsie (45) Gardner with Cherry (30), Oliver (20), Solomon (19), Betsie (13), Alamandra (12), Margaret (9), Victoria (8), M. J. (5), and Martha (23) (The John O. listed above in the 1850 census must be Oliver). Next door to Lawrence and Betsie is son John Gardner (28) and his wife Caroline (23).

John A. Gardner enlisted in Company B, 16th Infantry Regiment Virginia on 11 April 1862. He was hospitalized on May 30, 1862 at Charlottesville, VA. and detailed as nurse for wounded on June 16, 1862 at Lynchburg, VA Hospital. He returned to duty on May 16, 1863 (Estimated day)
John was wounded and captured on July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg, PA and confined on July 12, 1863 at Fort Delaware, DE. He was then transferred and confined on October 26, 1863 at Point Lookout, MD. John later died as a prisoner of war at the infamous Point Lookout Prison on January 2, 1864.

The 1870 Federal Census for Southampton Co., Va. records Lawrence (75) and Patsey (50) Gardner with Carrie (40), Martha (35), Victoria (18), Mary J. (14), Alexanda (23), and Jos E. (10). John's widow, Caroline, is now remarried to James T. Doughtie (see notes on James Doughtie).

The 1880 Federal Census for Southampton Co., Va. records Lawrence (80) and Elizabeth (51) Gardner with Cherry (40), Alamanda (30), Margaret (25), Victoria (23), and J. E. (21).
