  General Notes:

Research by Ginny Layman at the Suffolk, Va. Clerk of Courts Office indicates that Caroline was a widow to a Mr. Gardner before marrying James Thomas Doughtie at 27 years of age in 1868. Also included in the document is the fact that Caroline has parents listed as Robert and Caroline Daughtrey all from Southampton Co., VA. The 1850 census below implies the parents of Caroline to be Lawrence and Mary Daughtrey ... ???

The 1850 Federal Census for Southampton Co. records a Caroline Daughtrey, born ca 1833, as the daughter of Lawrence C. (46) and Mary (32) Daughtr(e)y and she is but a few pages over (in the 1850 U.S. Census, Virginia, Southampton, Nottaway Parish, page 330B-versus 332B), from John Gardner and family.

A Southampton Marriage Index records Lawrence Daughtry married to a Mary B. Scoggins on Dec 21, 1831.

Caroline married John A. Gardner, son of Lawrence Gardner and Betsie, about 1858. (John A. Gardner was born about 1831 in Southampton Co., Va. and died on 2 Jan 1864 in Point Lookout Prison, Maryland.)

Caroline next married James Thomas Doughtie, son of William (Henning) Doughtie and Ann (Nancy) Elizabeth Smith, on 19 Mar 1868 in Nansemond Co, VA. (James Thomas Doughtie was born in Jan 1845 in Gates Co, NC, died on 21 May 1913 in Cypress District, Nansemond Co., Va. and was buried in Whaleyville, Nansemond Co., VA.) The cause of his death was Cancer of the stomach.

You will not believe what I stumbled across while looking for some Cutchin information. A few years ago while in the Clerk's Office in Suffolk, I copied down some Doughtie marriages (not knowing who they were) and ... look what I found in my marriage records book:
