Apparently went by Thomas in that marriage records for his daughters indicate their parents as Thomas and Caroline.

The 1870 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., VA records James T. (25) and Caroline (38) Doughty. Also in the household are John T. (11) and Sarah A. (8) Gardner. Nansemond Co. Court records researched by Ginny Doughtie Layman found James T. Doughty married Caroline Gardner, widow, on Mar 19, 1868.

The 1880 census for Cypress, Nansemond Co., VA, page 59D, dated June 27, 1880 records James T. (40) and Caroline S. (49) "Doughus" [Doughtie] and family (as indexed by familysearch.org and ancestry.com). Children listed include John M. (20), Sarah (17), Florence (10), Maggie (8), and Ava (5). John and Sarah are from Caroline's first marriage to John Gardner. Ava's age is a bit uncertain in that the 1900 census records Ava Doughtie born in 1881. Perhaps vanity takes hold for Ava. The 1900 Federal Census for Cypress District, Nansemond Co., VA, District 24, page 57B, dated June 19, 1900 records Tom (Jan 1846 - VA/VA/VA) and Caroline (May 1840 - VA/VA/VA) Doughtie married 30 years with daughter Ava C. (July 1881). Tom and Caroline have had 5 children of whom 3 are still living. Near by is their married daughter, Maggie [Doughtie] Goodman ... see general notes on Maggie N. Doughtie.

The 1910 Federal Census for Cypress District, Nansemond Co., VA (District 9, page 55B) dated May 4, 1910 records J. T. (67 - NC/NC/NC) and Caroline S. (77 - VA/VA/VA) Dowdy (sic) [Doughtie] working at general farming. They indicate that this is the first marriage for James and the 2nd for Caroline. They have been married for 43 years and Caroline indicates she has had 5 children of which 4 are still living.

By 1914 Thomas has apparently died in that there is an April 4, 1914 Court Proceeding on the sale of the land belonging to the widow Susan Caroline Doughtie. The land is referred to the John Thomas Doughtie Farm.
