bullet  General Notes:

William and Nancy Doughtie lived in Gates Co., North Carolina in 1850 and probaly earlier. William is listed as a wheelmaker in the 1850 Federal Census for Gates Co., N.C., page 25B. It records William (41 - NC) and Nancey (35 - NC) Doughtie with children Henning (14), Ann A. (12), Elnathan (8), James T. (6), Robbin [Bolden] (4), and Joshua (1). William's employment is listed as a Wheel Maker. The 1840 Federal Census for Gates Co., NC records a Wm Doutee (sic) and family. This is most likely the same family in that the family is listed as 1 male, 30-40 [William], 1 female 20-30 [Nancy], 1 male 5-10 [Henning], and 1 female 0-5 [Ann]. 2 white persons >20 who can not read and write.

Reviewing census records for Gates Co., NC for the early 1800s leads one to suspect William H. Doughtie's father to be Edward Doughtie, born ca 1785 and died 1835. Brothers of William might be Andrew and Doctor Doughtie. Edward's father might be William Doughtie, born ca 1760 and died ca 1830. Nathanial Doughtie appears to be an uncle.

According to Hardesty's Historical and Geographical Encyclopedia, Special Virginia Edition, Nansemond County Personal Histories, published in 1885, the family moved to Nansemond Co., VA in February 1852 ... see general notes on his son, Bolden Riddick Doughtie, for details on that article.

The 1860 Federal Census for the Upper Parish of Nansemond Co., Va. (page 621) records William H. Dowdy (sic) (51) with wife Nancy Doughtie (sic) (48) and children Ann Doughtie (21), Nathan Doughtie (17), James Doughtie (16), Boldin Doughtie (13), Joshua Doughtie (11), and William Doughtie (8). The dad, William Doughtie, is listed as a farmer and all family members are born in N.C. He is reasonably successful in that he has real estate valued at $3,000 and personal property at valued at $400.

The 1870 Federal Census for Cypress Chapel, Nansemond Co., Va. (page 212) records William H. (61) and Elizabeth A. (55) Doughty with children Bolden (22) and William (18). Also in this census is Daily (30) and Elizabeth (9) Doughty. Daily and Elizabeth may be the family of William's son, Judson (Nathan), who died in the Civil War.

The 1880 Federal Census for Cypress, Nansemond Co., Va. ( page 59D) does not record William or Ann (Nancy) but does record son James T. "Doughus" and family (as indexed by familysearch.org and ancestry.com). Next door is James' brother Hen(n)ing S. "Dondie" his wife and family as well as brother Joshua Doughtie. Living nearby (ED#53, page 66B) is Bolling (sic) R. (34), Cornelia O. (32), Lydia O. (7), Alnona (6), and Anna C. (3) Doughte in the Cyress Magesterial District. Mary Etta Miltiere (16), who marries Bolden after Cornelia dies in 1894, is living with her parents and siblings next door to Bolden, Cornelia, and family.

bullet  Research Notes:

Finding the parents of William Doughtie yields several leads:

The 1810 Federal Census for Gates Co., NC records the families of Edward Doughie and William Doughtie.
William has 1 male 10-15, 1 male over 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 26-44. and 1 female over 45.
Edward has 5 males under 10, 1 male 26-44, and 1 female 26-44.

The 1820 Federal Census for Gates Co., NC records the families of Edward Doughtee and William Doughtee.
William has 2 males under 10, 1 male 16-26, 1 male over 45, 2 females 10-16, and 2 females 16-26.
Edward has 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 26-45, 1 female under 10, and 1 female 26-45. This sets up a possible Edward as the son of William and Edward as the father of our William Doughtie (father of Bolden).

Looking to the 1830 census reveals but 2 Doughtie families in Gates Co.: Nathaniel Doughtie and Treacy Doughtie. The Nathaniel Doughtie family has 1 male 5-10, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 30- 40, 1 female under 5, and 2 females 20-30.
North Carolina marriage records list Nathaniel Doughtie married to Susan Baker on June 4, 1829 and then Sarah Baker on September 24, 1841.
The Treacy Doughtie family has 1 female 10-15 and 1 female 50-60. Treacy is possibly Edward's widow and mother of William, father of Bolden.

Looking to the 1840 census reveals 3 Doughtie families in Gates Co.: Nathaniel Doughtie (indexed as Nathl Dowder at ancestry.com), Doctor Doughtie (indexed as Dowghty at ancestry.com), and William Doughtie (indexed as Wm Doutee at ancestry.com - Bolden's father).
