Dated July 29, 1874 - Deposition of Joshua L. Doughtie "in the matter of Mary A. Doughtie her friend against Joshua L. Doughtie feuding in the Circuit Court of Nansemond County, Virginia"
Joshua testifies that he is "25 years old, I reside in Nansemond County, VA, have been ever since 15 August 1872, was married to Mary A. Bryant, widow of Joshua Bryant deceased, and have resided since my marriage on the dower land of said Mary A. about 5 miles from Somerton in Nansemond County aforesaid."

The 1880 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., Va. (Dist 53, page 56A) records Joshua L. Doughdee [Doughtie] (30) living with his brother William H. Doughdie (26) and wife Jennie (18) and children Feloware (6) and Anne Lee (4). Joshua indicates that he is single and no state of birth is given implying that to be Virginia. William is the head of the family, Jennie is his wife, while Feloware and Ann Lee are their daughters. No state of birth is given to those four implying that to be Virginia.

By 1900 Joshua Doughtie appears to have moved to Richland Parish, Louisiana with his brother, William. The 1900 Federal Census for Police Jury Ward 4, Richland Co., Louisiana (ED# 100, page 185A) records Joshua L. Doughtie (July 1849 - VA/Ireland/NC)) with his wife Henrietta (Feb 1855 - NC/NC/NC) and children Martha (April 1884 - NC/VA/NC), Bessie (July 1886 - NC/VA/NC), Ella (July 1888 - NC/VA/NC), Charles (June 1889 - NC/VA/NC), and Lucille (July 1894 - NC/VA/NC). Joshua and Henrietta have been married 14 years and have had 7 children of which 6 are still living. Joshua is a farmer. Note: The 7 children with 6 still living is interesting in that 5 are listed in this census record ... this researcher suspects that the 1880 census listed above showing children Feloware and Anne Lee actually describe Joshua's 2 children. Feloware must have died and Anne Lee is in fact Lelia Doughtie who came to Louisiana with the family and married George Houston Taylor.

The 1910 Federal Census for Washington District, Norfolk County, VA, District 81, page 151A, dated April 19, 1910 records Joshua L. (61 - VA/VA/VA) and Henrietta (50 - NC/NC/NC) Doughtie (spelled Doudy in the census record) with daughters Lucille Doughtie (16 - VA/VA/NC) and Elizabeth Doughtie (19 - VA/VA/VA) at 15 Perry Street. Joshua and Henrietta have been married for 35 years (1st marriage for both) and have had 5 children all of whom are still living. Elizabeth is employed as a Winder in a Knitting Mill while the 3 other family members have no employment. Also in the household are boarders David Culpepper, John Respus, and Exum Swindale. Nearby (page 150A) are son Charles A. Doughtie and his wife Lena ... see notes on Charles A. Doughtie Sr.

... I have found few other records for Joshua and Henrietta nor their daughters Martha, Bessie, Ella, and Lucille; however, Charles and family remained to Virginia while Joshua and Henrietta moved back to Virginia ... see general notes on Charles Ashwell Doughtie.

It is reasonable to conclude that this is Joshua Doughtie in that his son, Charles and his wife Alena, are buried in the same plot.
