Henning Smith Doughtie ⁸³

  General Notes:

CSA 6th Virginia Infantry, Company E, 2nd Lt. Enlisted 4/1861. He resigned his commission in March 1863 and transferred by General Order #85 by General R. E. Lee, assigned by Brig. Gen. Mahone to Capt. Grandy's Artillery Battalion 3/26/63.

Henning Doughtie was born in 1835, the son of William H. and Elizabeth Smith Doughtie.

H. S. Doughtie married Sarah Jane Norfleet (1840-1929) March 16, 1870. (Note: The Daily Courier (Petersburg, Va.) (Film 228). Notice published March 21, 1870, page 2, column 2. Available on microfilm from the Library of Virginia.) He died in 1910 and is buried at Liberty Springs Christian Church Cemetery located at the intersection of Liberty Springs Road and Whaleyville Blvd. in Suffolk, Va.

The 1880 census for Cypress, Nansemond Co., Va., District 53, page 59D records James T. "Doughus" and family (as indexed by familysearch.org and ancestry.com). Next door is brother Hen(n)ing S. "Dondie" and family. In the household is Henning (45) with his wife Sarah J. (38) and son Charles W. (3) Doughtie. Also in the household is farm hand William J. Smith (15).

The 1900 Federal Census for Cypress District, Nansemond Co., Va. (District 24, page 52B) records Henning S. (Nov 1836 - NC/NC/NC) and Sarah J. (Jan 1842 - NC/NC/NC) Doughtie married 30 years. Sarah reports having had 1 child that is no longer living.

Henning married Sara Jane Norfleet, daughter of John Abraham Norfleet and Rachael L. Knight, on 16 Mar 1870 in Nansemond Co, VA..²⁸ (Sara Jane Norfleet was born on 8 Mar 1840 in Nansemond Co, VA, died on 24 Aug 1929 in Nansemond Co, VA and was buried in Liberty Springs Christian Church, Nansemond, VA..) The cause of her death was Acute Dilatation of Heart.

You will not believe what I stumbled across while looking for some Cutchin information. A few years ago while in the Clerk's Office in Suffolk, I copied down some Doughtie marriages (not knowing who they were) and ... look what I found in my marriage records book:
