The 1900 Federal Census for Lancaster City, Ward 6, Pennsylvania, ED#55, page 77B records Wayne (June 1850 - PA/PA/PA) and Amelia (June 1860 - NY/Germany/Germany) Shay with children George (Aug 1878), Lizzie (Oct 1881), William (Feb 1883), Harry (July 1886), Laura V. (Nov 1891), and Charles (June 1894) living at 233 East Chestnut Street. Wayne is a day laborer while Amelia is listed as having had 7 children of whom 6 are still living. This census records 22 years of marriage, however, the 1880 census lists Wayne (21) living with his parents and Amelia is not listed. The 1880 Federal Census for Lancaster City, Pennsylvania, ED#151, page 73B records Wayne Shay (21 - PA/PA/PA) living with his parents. Wayne is a brick maker and indicates that he can not read nor write. The entire census record in order of household members listed is as follows: William (63) [father] and his wife Elizabeth (60) [mother] Shay, daughter Salome Frankford (31) with her 2 daughters Laura (7) and Lizzie (5), son Wayne Shay (21), and finally grand daughter Jennie Stark (3). Salome and Wayne are both listed as married.
The 1910 Federal Census for Lancaster City, Ward 6, Pennsylvania, ED#74, page 236A records Wayne (52 - PA/PA/PA) and Amelia (50 - NY/Germany/Germany) Shay with children Laura (20), and Charles (16) living at 237 East Chestnut Street. Wayne is a Packer at a Tobacco Factory while Amelia is listed as having had 7 children of whom 6 are still living. This census records 32 years of marriage. Interesting to note that Charles is employed as a Peddler of Pretzels.
The 1920 Federal Census for Lancaster City, Ward 6, Pennsylvania, ED#64, page 187A records Wayne (62 - PA/PA/PA) and Amelia (60 - NY/Germany/Germany) Shay with son William Shay (35 - single) living at 237 North Cherry Street. Wayne is a Packer at a Tobacco Warehouse while William is employed as a Lineman for the Steam Rail Road.
The 1930 Federal Census for Lancaster City, Ward 6, Pennsylvania, ED#56, page 187A records Wayne (72 - PA/PA/PA) and Amelia (70 - NY/Germany/Germany) Shay living at 237 Cherry Street. Wayne is a Laborer at a Tobacco Factory Warehouse and has been married to Amelia for 52 years. There are 6 boarders living at the house which is valued at $2,700. The 6 boarders include George Shay (48 - PA/PA/PA) who has been married for 24 years, although no wife is listed, and what appear to be his sons, John (18) and Howard (13) Shay. George is Laborer at the Linoleum Plant and John is a decorator at the Can Company.
