The 1870 Federal Census for Jackson Ward of Portsmouth City, Virginia records Charles B. Hinkerty (28 - PA) living in the household of Arthur (59 - VA) and Jane E. Freeman (57 - VA). Also in the household is Leathe A. Hingerty (20 - VA). She is listed as "Lives with her Father" so apparently she is the wife of Charles but she and her husband live with her parents.

The 1880 Federal Census for Western Branch, Norfolk Co., Virginia, District 66, page 201B, dated June 12, 1880 records Charles (28 - VA/VA/VA) and Leatha (30 - VA/VA/VA) Hingerty (indexed as Hulketty at ancestry.com) with their son Clarence Hingerty (6 - VA). Charles is listed as "At Home" while Leatha as "Keeps School".

It appears that Charles and Leatha may have died since the 1900 census lists their son as adopted: The 1900 Federal Census for Portsmouth Ward 4, Portsmouth City, Virginia, District 121, page 167A, dated June 8, 1900 records Clarence Hinckey (sic) [Hingerty] (Sept 1874 - VA/VA/VA) living with Joseph (March 1846 - NY/ Ireland/Ireland) and Mary E. (Oct 1853 - VA/VA/VA) Miller and their 2 sons Fredrick (Oct 1875) and George (Feb 1885). Also in the household is Joseph's married daughter, Mary P. Oliver (March 1878) and her husband Milton J. Oliver (March 1872) and their children William C. (Aug 1895), Edward (Feb 1895), and Rosa M. (Dec 1899). Joseph is a soldier and his wife a laundress.
