From the Virginian-pilot., November 17, 1900, Page 8 Suffolk, VA, Nov. 16 - Katherine, 11 months old, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Daughtrey, who live near Holland, twelve miles from Suffolk, was burned to death to-day. The face and portions of the body were roasted brown. While looking after her household duties Mrs. Daughtrey left Katherine on a rug before an open fireplace. A live spark popped out and ignited her dress. Alarmed by the baby's screams, which grew weaker and weaker, Mrs. Daughtrey rushed into the room and made an heroic effort to save her off spring, but in vain. Katherine lived three hours. The mother's hands were painfully burned. Dr. Gavin Rawls, of Carrsville, was called, but could not save the little one. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock to-morrow afternoon, and will be preached by Rev J. E. Jones.
