The 1850 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., VA, page 170A, dated September 18, 1850 records James H. (31) and Margaret C. (25) Daughtrey with children Jacob E. (5), Sarah J. (3), and Mary E. (9/12). Also in the household is Sarah E. Saunders (15 - NC).

The 1860 Federal Census for the Upper Parish, Nansemond Co., VA, Suffolk, P. O., page 587, dated Sept 18, 1860 records James H. (41) and Margaret (34) Daughtrey with children Jacob (14), Sarah (12), Mary (10), Ann (7), Dempsey (4), and Vada (1). Also in the household is Sarah E. Saunders (25 - VA) working as a domestic.

The 1870 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., VA, Suffolk P. O., page 267B, dated August 19, 1870 records James Daughtrey (51) with wife Ann E. (34) with children Sarah J. (22), Mary E. (20), Ann M. (17), Dempsey J. (14), Vada C. (12), Margaret E. (10), James T. (4), Charles B. (2), and Alice R. (2/12). James first wife Margaret Landston has died and he has remarried to Ann E. Parker. They have children James, Charles, and Alice.

The 1880 Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., Va., District 55 records James H. (61) and Mary E. (44) (This is probably Elizabeth Parker) Daughtrey with children Mary E. (24), Vada C. (18), Margaret (16), James T. (12), Charles B. (9), Alice R. (8), Abram P. (6), and Susan L. (3). Also in the 1880 household is Mary's son, Willis H. Howell (20).

A July 13, 2009 email from Hunter Daughtrey gives the correct location of the family cemetery: The [Daughtrey] family cemetery sat outside my bedroom window by about 15 yards at 7700 Ruritan Blvd intersection with Indian Trail [North side of the intersection]
