He was known as Jake Eddie.

Jacob served the C.S.A. in Co. I, 24th Va. Cavalry. He enlisted Dec. 10, 1862 and was present without his horse on Oct. 31, 1864. It is written in the History of the 24th Virginia Cavalry that Jake became a Rebel deserter, took the Oath of Allegiance and was released from City Point to Suffolk, Va. on April 12, 1865.

The 1870 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., Va. records Jacob E., with his wife, Lucy A., and his children, George M. and Alfred G., living next door to his father, James.

The 1880 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., Va. District 55, page 132B, dated June 28, 1880 records J. E. (35) and Lucy A. (30) Daughtrey with children George W. (12), Alfred J. (10), Louise (8), Jno Hunter (5), James R. (2), and Jaky (10/12).

The 1900 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., VA, District 26, page 115B, dated June 21, 1900 records Jacob E. (Sept 1845) and Lucy A. (Jan 1846) Daughtrey with children Ralston J. (Apr 1878) and Margaret M. (Aug 1881). Also in the household is Jacob's widowed sister, Mary E. Andrews (Oct 1849), and her children Bessie (May 1884) and Charlie (July 1888). Jacob and Lucy have been married for 33 years and have had 11 children of whom 6 are still living.

The 1910 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., VA records Jacob (J. E. Daughtry - 64), with his wife, Lucy A. (64) living on Washington Street in Suffolk, VA. They have been married 45 years and have had 11 children of which 6 are still living.

There is a pension application requested by John H. Daughtrey regarding his mother, Lucy A. Daughtrey, dated Jan. 9, 1899 and also for his father, Jacob E. Daughtrey, dated Jan. 6, 1912.
