William H. L. Goodman enlisted in Company S, 5th North Carolina Infantry as a hospital steward on June 4, 1861 at the age of 22. He was wounded at Gettysburg, captured and confined to Point Lookout, MD on July 7, 1863. He was exchanged on March 6, 1864 at City Point, Va. and was a part of the surrender and parole while serving in Company S of the 5th N.C. Infantry at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
The 1900 Federal Census for Franklin, Southampton Co., Va. District 60 records W. H. R. Goodman (Dec 1839) and wife Josie (April 1841) with their only surviving child, B. J. (Dec 1869) living on Clay Street. W. H. R. is listed as a Physician.
The 1910 Federal Census for Franklin, Southampton Co., Va. District 119 records William H. R. Goodman (70) and wife Josie L. (70).
