bullet  General Notes:

J. D. and Eliza Goodman are listed in the 1850 & 1860 Federal Census records for Gates Co., N.C. In 1850: Jethro D. Goodman (38) with wife Louisa (40) [Eliza] and children Mary E. (15), Indiann (13), William H. (11), Elizabeth C. (8), Pennia P. (6) and James H. (16) with real estate valued at $2,232. In 1860: J. D. Goodman (48) with wife Eliza (50) and children India (22), Wm (21), Cherry E. (19), and Permela M. (16) with real estate valued at $5,000 and personal property at $19,185. The 1850 Slave Schedule Census records Jethro with 14 slaves. By 1860 Jethro has 26 slaves with 5 slave houses.

Jethro Goodman (57) is listed without Eliza in the 1870 Federal Census for Gates Co., N.C., Reynoldson Township. He has remarried someone named Mary (40) [Mary Jane Rawls - Eliza's sister] and children William (10) and Penny (20) are still at home. The post war economic devastation of the south is clearly demonstrated with Jethro's real estate now valued at $2,000 and personal property at $200. Mary Goodman is also listed as his wife in the 1880 Federal Census for Gates Co., N.C., Reynoldson Township: J. D. (68 - NC) and Mary J. (54 - VA) Goodman. This Mary J. is Eliza Rawls' sister. Notes on the family history from "Aunt Emily" Daughtrey, Eli's daughter, confirm that Eliza and Mary Jane are sisters. A book written about the Reynoldson Baptist Church in Gates Co. also detail facts about this family.

Hi Bo,
I really enjoyed talking to you Friday. As I told you, I went to the beach to see Ashby's wife and children and we were looking at some of the family things he has and found a collar with lace with the following note enclosed: Aunt Mary Goodman was married in this. Wife of Uncle Jet Goodman, my father's aunt. She had no children. This must have belonged to Mary [ Mary Rawls Goodman,] Randolph's [Randolph Rawls] sister and Robert's [Robert Rawls] father. I thought you may enjoy this bit of further proof of the marriage [between Jet Goodman and Mary Rawls]. The Elizabeth [who] was first married to Abram Copeland who died 16 Aug 1943 and they had one child, Margaret who died 7 Dec 1846. I have copies from a book written about the Reynoldson Baptist church [of Gates CO., NC] which contains a lot of material on Goodman's and Lees, especially Jethro D. Goodman. This only gives the name of Penniah Willey and Jethro D. Goodman and his parents were William Goodman and Charity Lee. It list four children:
W.H. L. Goodman, I.M.O. Rawls wife of A.J. Rawls, Elizabeth (Betty) Charity Edwards and Margaret Penniah Long of Gates County. This indenture was March 11, 1882 and they gave land to the church. The children must have all been Penniah Willeys, then Mary and finally Elizabeth. There is a picture of his house in the book.

This is the code for Heritage Quest (first line: 03C67RJ3GR) (second line: WELCOME) This should work for you. We get this service though our library.
I do not have many of the Daughtrey wills and deed on the computer. I will send you what I have.
Let me hear from you real soon.
Until later,
Nita
