The 1900 Federal Census for Cedar Rapids, Linn Co., Iowa, District 102 records the widow Catherine Gairns (June 1842 - Scotland) and daughters Jeanie (June 1875) and Sarah (June 1881) living at 310 G Avenue. Catherine has had 6 children of which 5 are still living. Catherine reports that she immigrated to this country in 1865. Also in the household is Catherine's mother, Jean McCurrie (Jan 1810) (who has had 11 children of which 2 are still living), who immigrated in 1865, Charles H. Grant (Sept 1869 - Scotland/Scotland/Scotland), future son-in-law (married to Jean M. Gairns), and William Smith (Feb 1869 - Scotland/Scotland/Scotland), future son-in-law (married to Sarah Gairns), both of whom report they immigrated in 1889. Charles is employed as a Mill Wright while William is a Shipping Clirk (sic). ... it appears that William Smith and Charles Grant were immigrant friends who boarded with the Gairns family and later married sisters Jeane and Sarah. Charles Grant and Jeane Gairns were married and moved to Joliet, Illinois around 1915.

My Grandmother was Jeane McCurrie Gairns and she was born in Chicago in 1875. Her Mother was Catherine McCurrie, born June 30, 1842., in Rothes, Knokondo Parrish, Scotland [Rothes, Knockando Parish, Scotland]. The story was that Catherine was married on the ship coming to America from Scotland, and you know how many clans there are in Scotland. No doubt they were related, but the dates don't quite fit. I don't know Catherine's maiden name, either. I can remember Mom talking about "Grandma McCurrie" but that's all. Jeane Adkins Hague
Jeane married Charles James Hay Grant about 1900. (Charles James Hay Grant was born on 17 Sep 1869 in Knochando, Knockando, Moray, Scotland and died on 23 Oct 1930 in Joliet City, Will Co., Illinois.)
