Early 1800s census records indicate a Henry Stahl living in Heidelberg, York Co., Pa. His wife is possibly Salome. This could be the same family in that Adams Co. was formed from York.
The 1850 Federal Census for Butler Township, Adams Co., Pa. (pages 3 & 4) records John (57) Stahl and wife Mary (50) with children Henry (22), Eliza (19), Susan (16), Jesse (13), John (11), and Abraham (8). All family members are born in Pa.
The 1860 Federal Census for Heidelberg Post Office, Tyrone Township, Adams Co., Pa. (page 625) records John (60) and wife Mary (56) Stall [Stahl] with children Susannah (23), Jesse (24), John (20), and Abraham (18). John's son Henry Stall [Stahl] (32) is married to Margaret (25) with children Henry (5), John (3), William (2), and Mary (9/12) and is living in nearby Straban Township, Adams Co., Pa. (census records-page 603).
The 1870 Federal Census for Bendersville Post Office, Menallen Township, Adams Co., Pa. (page 256) records John (74) and wife Mary (70) Stahl with son Abraham (26) and daughter Susanna (25). The varied ages for Susanna are probably due to her unmarried status and the perception that she is less eligible as she gets older.
John married Mary. (Mary was born about 1800 in Pennsylvania and died after 1870 in Adams Co. Pennsylvania.)
