DOROTHY H. CANNING
Dorothy H. Canning, 97, of 771 Long's Gap Road, Carlisle and formerly of Laporte, PA [Sullivan Co.], died Monday, Feb. 12, 2007 in Manor Care Health Services, Carlisle.
Born Aug. 20, 1909, in New Cumberland, she was a daughter of the late Clyde S. and Mary Agnes Forry Hale. She was the widow of William S. Canning.
She was a graduate of the former New Cumberland High School and was a member of Laporte United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Canning was retired from General Electric where she was a secretary for 10 years. Prior to this she had worked for 23 years for General Fireproofing.
She was a surrogate mother to Betty Toomey, of Sandy Springs, MD and her 6 children.
She was preceded in death by a sister: Elva Thomas and a nephew Richard Platz.
Survivors include her sister: Louise E. Barr of Carlisle, 4 nieces: Lois Forbes of Newport, Dorothy Balash of Davenport FL, Harriet Findley of Mt. Holly Springs and JoAnn, wife of David, Powell of Modena, NY; a God Daughter: Dianne Walker of Chesapeake, VA and her caregiver: Becky Gulden of Carlisle.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Ronan Funeral Home, Carlisle, is handling arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
