According to the Anniversary History of Lehigh County, James was born on the homestead and began farming it in 1863 along with an ajoining farm. He farmed the homestead of 114 acres for 11 years and then in 1878 he moved to Bethlehem Township and later to East Allen Township. He retired in 1902 in Schoenersvile, but still retaining a farm in Lower Nazareth Township. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Lichtenwalner Family Reunion, a Republican, and a member of the Lutheran Church.
