The 1910 Federal Census for Reading, Ward 5, Berks Co., PA (District 59, page 139A) records the widow Mary E. Souders (52 - PA/PA/Ireland) with children Edgar E. (27), Florence M. (20), Evaline F. (16), Katherine (14), Nuiall A. (11), George B. M. (10), and Warren J. (7) living at 244 South Forth Street. Mary has no employment, Edgar is a grander at an Optical Company, Florence is a Welder at a Stocking Facotory, Evaline is a Soderer at an Optical Company, and Katherine is an Examiner at an Optical Company. Mary E. Souders has had 15 children of whom 9 are still living.

The 1900 Federal Census for Reading, Ward 1, Berks Co., PA (District 46, page 82B) records James A. (Sept 1857 - PA/PA/PA) and Mary E. (Oct 1858 - PA/PA/Ireland) Souders with children Edgar E. (17), James F. (15), Florence M. (12), Loraine M. (9), Evaline F. (6), Catherine (4), Nuell A. (1), George W. (3/12), and Alice M. Gamser [Ganster?] (June 1879). Alice is listed as an "S Daughter". James is a Huckster and has been married to Mary for 20 years. Edgar is a driller and James is an errand boy. Mary E. Souders has had 13 children of whom 9 are still living.


The 1870 Federal Census for Reading, Ward 1, Berks Co., PA, page 698A/B records James Souder (sic) (13 - PA) living with his parents Jacob (64 - PA) and Harriett (47 - PA) Souder and siblings Bart (22), Milton L. (19), and Thomas L. (17). Jacob is employed as a "Local Expresser" and has real estate valued at $1,600 and a personal estate at $400. Bart and Thomas are Laborers while Milton is an Apprentice to a Baker.

The 1860 Federal Census for Reading, South West Ward, Berks Co., PA, page 698A/B records Jacob Souders (indexed as Sanders at ancestry.com) (55 - PA) and Harriet (40 - PA) Souders with children Phebe (25), William (14), Lenard (13), Lightner (9), Thomas (8), and James (3). Also in the household is Theodosia Shervin (76 - PA). Jacob is employed as a "Day Laborer" and has real estate valued at $1,800. Phebe is a school teacher.

The 1850 Federal Census for Reading, North West Ward, Berks Co., PA, page 698A/B records Jacob Souders (45 - PA) and Harriet (33 - PA) Souders with children John W. (20), Mary Jane (17), Catherine (15), Phebe Ann (13), Selina E. (11), William S. (6), and Leonard E. (3). Jacob is employed as a "Coal Merchant" and has real estate valued at $6,000.

James married Mary E. Maurer, daughter of Franklin Maurer and Catherine, on 4 Apr 1881 in Reading, Berks Co., PA. (Mary E. Maurer was born in Oct 1858 in Pennsylvania, died after 1920 in Reading, Berks Co., PA. and was buried in Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading, Berks Co., PA.)
