  General Notes:

The 1910 Federal Census for Reading, Ward 5, Berks Co., PA (District 59, page 139A) records the widow Mary E. Souders (52 - PA/PA/Ireland) with children Edgar E. (27), Florence M. (20), Eveline F. (16), Katherine (14), Nuiell A. (11), George B. M. (10), and Warren J. (7) living at 244 South 4th Street. Edgar is a grinder at an Optical Company, Florence is a Welder at a Stocking Company, Eveline is a Soderer at an Optical Company, and Katherine is an Examiner at an Optical Company. Mary E. Souders has had 15 children of whom 9 are still living.


The 1880 Federal Census for Reading, Ward 2, Berks Co., PA (District 41, page 57B) records Mary Maurer (22 - PA/PA/Ireland) living with her widowed mother, Catherine Maurer (57 - Ireland/Ireland/Ireland), and siblings Isaac (20 - PA/PA/Ireland) and Sallie (18 - PA/PA/Ireland) living on Muhlenburg Street. Also in the household are Clara Deeter (15 - PA/PA/Ireland - boarder) and Alice M. Ganster (1 - PA/PA/PA) ... Alice is listed as a "daughter" but to which woman is unknown. Next door is Franklin Maurer (23 - Machinist) and his wife Maggie (22 - PA/Germany/Germany) and daughter Katy (2). It is interesting that the 1900 census lists Alice M. Ganser as a step daughter to James T. Souders, Mary Maurer's husband. Perhaps Mary had a child to a Mr. Ganster before she married James. Or perhaps Alice is the child of Clara Deeter ... the 1870 census shows a Clara Maurer as a daughter of Catherine.

[To determine if Alice is the daughter of Mary Maurer, one can trace Alice through the census records of Reading, narrow the time of death, and perhaps get a death certificate: 1920 Reading Census, Ward 1, District 52, page records Alice (41 - PA/PA/PA) and Warren (47 - PA/PA/PA) Smith with children Harriett (13), Wayne (12), Whalen (10), and Thomas (3 6/12) living at 535 Laurel Street.
1930 Reading Census, Ward 1, District 63, page records Alice (51 - PA/PA/PA) and Warren (57 - PA/PA/PA) Smith with son Thomas (13) living at 1525 Fairview Street. Warren and Alice have been married for 28 years.]

The 1870 Federal Census for Reading, Ward 2, Berks Co., PA, page 813B records Mary Maury (sic) (12 - PA) living with her widowed mother, Cath Maury (sic) (36 - Ireland), and siblings Frank (13 - PA), Isaac (11 - PA), Sallie (7 - PA), and Clara (5 - PA).

Mary married James A. Souders on 4 Apr 1881 in Reading, Berks Co., PA. (James A. Souders was born in Sep 1857 in Pennsylvania, died circa 1909 in Reading, Berks Co., PA. and was buried in Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading, Berks Co., PA.)
