The 1860 Federal Census for the Western District, Tazewell Co., Virginia, Knob P. O., page 822, taken July 23, 1860 records Matilda Belcher (27) living with her parents Joshua Belcher (68) and siblings Zachariah Belcher (32), Permelia Belcher (25), and Winfield Belcher (22). Joshua is a farmer and has real estate valued at $2,320 and a personal estate valued at $1,262.
Matilda married Rezin Ratcliff Steele, son of George Steele and Rosannah Fannin, on 3 Apr 1866 in Tazewell Co., VA. (Rezin Ratcliff Steele was born on 31 Mar 1821 in Tazewell Co., VA, died on 18 May 1901 in Russel Co., VA. and was buried in Steele Cemetery, Richlands, Tazewell County, VA.)
