Donald Eugene Rannels, Jr., 61, died Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at his home in Hershey.

"Gene," the loving husband of Bonnie Rannels, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends. They had journeyed with him through a long and courageous fight against leukemia.

Born in Lancaster on April 5, 1946, he was the first born son of the late Donald E. Rannels, Sr. and Jane Reinhold Rannels, currently of Lititz

He was a 1964 graduate of Warwick High School and recipient of the Eagle Scout Award that same year.

In 1968, he received his bachelor of science degree in zoology at Penn State University, where he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He received his PhD in physiology at Penn State's College of Medicine in Hershey in 1972, under the advisorship of Howard E. Morgan, M.D. He then joined the faculty in the Department of Cellular & Molecular Physiology, and later received a joint appointment in the Department of Anesthesia as senior scientist of pulmonary biology.

In 1974, as an expert in cardiac metabolism, he was the first exchange scientist sent to the Soviet Union through the USA-USSR Exchange of Health Professionals program.

In 1993 he was named a Distinguished Professor at Pennsylvania State University. He served as Assistant Dean for Graduate Education at the College of Medicine and as vice-chairman of the Department of Cellular & Molecular Physiology from 1992-1999. He served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Physiology, Biochemical Journal and the International Journal of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, and held numerous memberships in professional societies. He was retired in June, 2005 as Distinguished Professor Emeritus.

Rannels had been an avid supporter of local music and art organizations, the Lancaster Bird Club, and the Manada, Lancaster and Lebanon Valley Conservancies.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie; his mother, Jane Rannels of Lititz; son Jacob, husband of Melissa Rannels, of San Francisco; stepdaughter Jennifer, wife of Brant Hasler of Tucson, Ariz.; brother Stephen, husband of Sharon Rannels, of Hershey; and sisters, Cathleen Rannels, of Bethlehem; and Anne, wife of Bill Fox, of Lafayette, Col.

A memorial service was held Saturday, June 16 at the Lititz Moravian Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the "The Girls" team Light the Night Walk, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 800 Corporate Circle, Suite 100, Harrisburg, Pa. 17110; or the Manada Conservancy, the Lancaster County Conservancy or Lebanon Valley Conservancy.
