The 1900 Federal Census for Lindsay, Albemarle Co., VA, District 6, page 131A, dated June 29, 1900 records James (Oct 1843 - VA/VA/VA) and Eliza (Nov 1850 - VA/VA/VA) Mahanes with children Eliza (Sept 1883) and Eugene (June 1885). James and Eliza indicate they have been married for 30 years and have had 8 children of whom 6 are still living. Note that much of the information written on James is scrathed out ... he is lkisted as single while Eliza as married and as the mother of the person listed above her [James]. With the information below indicating Eliza's huisband died in 1884, the James listed here must be her son (see 1880 census facts under her husband) and the date of birth must be Oct 1873.
His wife, Eliza Mahanes, filed an application for a Pension by a Widow of a Soldier on May 2, 1900. She indicates she was married to James H. Mahanes in 1867 in Green Co. James served in Company C, Gordonsville Grays, 13th Virginia Regiment. She reports his death as April 1884 due to pnemonia and that he had been shot through the lungs.
