The 1860 Federal Census for Fredericksville Parish, Albemarle Co., VA, Charlottesville P. O., page 400, dated July 18, 1860 records Meridith Mahanes (53 - VA) with his wife Sarah (47 - VA) and children L. A. (20 -female), Rebecca (18), J. H. (17 - male), W. S. (16 - male), C. E. (14 - male), S. F. (13 - female), Geo E. (12), and M. F. (10 - female).

The 1870 Federal Census for Fredericksville Parish, Albemarle Co., VA, Charlottesville P. O., page 324B, dated July 15, 1870 records M. Mahanes (63 - VA) with his wife Sarah B. (55 - VA) and children George R. (21) and Mary (18). Next door is William S. Mahanes (25) with his wife Lucy J. (22) and their children Sallie (2) and Delia (6/12).
