Alvin Wesley DYER Jr., born in Richmond, Va. on September 12, 1921, the only child of Alvin Wesley Dyer Sr. and Mabel Smith Dyer, passed away May 27, 2014. He was raised in the village of Westhampton, which was then part of Henrico County. He graduated from Westhampton High School in 1938, where he lettered in three sports and then attended Benedictine High School, graduating with the class of 1940. While at Benedictine, he played on the 1940 Basketball team that traveled to Chicago for the National Catholic Interscholastic Tournament. He enrolled at Virginia Polytechnic Institute for the class of 1944, where he was a member of the baseball team. In 1942 however, he left VPI and enlisted in the United States Army, rising to the rank of Master Sergeant, before attending Officer Candidate School. He was commissioned as Second Lieutenant. He served with the 1629th Combat Engineers in the Pacific Theater in 1944 and 1945 before being stationed in Japan until 1947, when he was discharged. He attended The College of William and Mary after his return. In 1950, he was recalled for the Korean War, rising to the rank of Captain. He was the owner and president of the W.H. Stovall Company until retiring in 1979. He served on the Board of Directors of the Richmond Builders Exchange, Children Incorporated and the Delmar Club of Naples, Florida. He was a founding member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church and served on the vestry and as Senior Warden. He was predeceased by his first wife, Audrey Stovall Dyer. He is survived by his second wife, Elizabeth "Libby" Johnstone Dyer; as well as his four children, Deborah Rock, Douglass Young, Brian Dyer and John Dyer; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his cousin, Tommie Gilman; and special friends, Jan Hunt, Bob and Marti Latshaw, and Phil and Sydney Sherrod. His was a life well lived.
