The 1910 Federal Census for Reidsville, Ward 4, Rockingham Co., Va, District 166, page 230B records Edwin (35) and Susie (32) Wingfield with children Gertrude (11), Jesse (7), Jamie (5), and Edgar (10/12). Edwin is a Machinist in a Tobacco Factory and has been married 13 years.
The WWI Draft Registration Card for Edwin Marshall Wingfield records his date of birth as Dec. 1, 1873. He is currently employed as a Machinist for DuPont Co. of Hopewell, VA. His nearest relative is Mrs. Susie A. Wingfield of 96 10th Street SE. His physical description is medium height and slender build with brown eyes and brown hair. He has a second draft card with the same date (Sept 12, 1918) where all information is the same except: medium height and medium build with gray eyes and dark hair.
The 1920 Federal Census for Roanoke City., VA, Jefferson Ward 2, District 23, page 104A records Edwin (40) and Sadie (37) Wingfield with children James (15), Edgar D. (10), Hubie (7), Hazel (2 7/12), and Bertha (1 1/12) renting at 136 Ten and one half Street. Edwin is a Machinist in a Candy Factory.
It is a sad commentary that by 1930 Edwin and Sadie have apparently died and their daughters, Hazel and Bertha Wingfield, are "inmates" at the Baptist Orphanage in Salem, VA: The 1930 Federal Census for Salem, Roanoke, Co., VA District 11, page 181A, dated May 7, 1930 records Hazel (13) and Bertha (11) Wingfield as Inmates in the Baptist Orphanage. This researcher has found no other records for the other children.
