bullet  General Notes:

Andrew is living with his mother and siblings in the 1885 Iowa census ... see general notes on his mother, Catherine McCurrie.

There is an Andrew Gairns listed in the 1910 census in Idaho. This may or may not be "our" Andrew Gairns: The 1910 Federal Census for Pocatello Ward 4, Bannock Co., Idaho, District 34, page 209A, dated April 15, 1910 records Andrew H. (Illinois/Scotland/Scotland) and Mary (31 - Ohio/Germany/Germany) Gairns with children William O. (7 - Iowa) and Treasure L. (1 9/12 - Utah). Andrew is a Superintendent with the R. R. Also in the household are cousins Treasure V. Jackman (40 - Nevada/Scotland/Scotland) and her daughter Susan Jackman (17 - Iowa/England/Nevada). Treasure Jackman states that she has been married for 20 years and has had 2 children, 1 of whom is still living.
Further research indicates that the above Andrew Gairns is indeed "our" Andrew. The cousin above, Treasure Jackman, turns out to be the sister of Andrew's mother, Catherine McCurrie. as noted by the 1900 and 1880 Federal census records along with the Scottish Census records (see general notes on Catherine McCurrie): The 1900 Federal Census for Ogden Ward 2, Weber Co., Utah, District 186, page 134B, dated June 9, 1900 records Treasure Jackman (June 1869 - Nevada) with her husband Thomas Jackman (June 1866 - England) and their daughter Susan E. Jackman (Aug 1892 - Iowa/England/Nevada) living with Treasure's widowed mother Anna [McCurrie]Robertson (May 1842 - Scotland/Scotland/Scotland) at 176 21st Street. Anna is a grocer while Thomas works at the Round House [for a Rail Road]. Anna has had 4 children of whom 3 are still living while Thomas and Treasure have been married for 10 years and have had 2 children of whom 1 is still living. Also in the household is a nephew, William Anderson (May 1870 - Illinois/Scotland/Scotland). William Anderson is the son of David and Helen McCurrie Anderson (see general notes on Helen McCurrie, Catherine McCurrie's sister).
The 1880 Federal Census for White Pine, Nevada, District 55, page 332A, dated June 1, 1880 records John L. (46 - Scotland/Scotland/Scotland) and Ann R. [McCurrie] (38 - Scotland/Scotland/Scotland) Robertson with children M. C. Jennie (16 - Nevada), Treasure V. (11 - Nevada), and William A. (5 - Nevada). John Robertson is a Post Master.

This researcher has not found (as of Nov 2009) Andrew in the 1900 census records; however, by 1920 Andrew is found to have moved to Cook Co., Illinois: The 1920 Federal Census for Lyons, Cook Co., Illinois, District 106, page 129A/B, dated January 7, 1920 records Andrew (47 - IL/Scotland/Scotland) and Emma (44 - Iowa/Pomerania/Pomerania) Gairns (indexed as Gassner at ancestry.com) with children William (16 - Iowa/IL/IL) and Treasure (11 - Utah/IL/Iowa) living at 46 [South] Waiola Avenue. Andrew's employment appears to be Dist Mang [District Manager?] at a Car Foundry. Also in the household is Andrew's unmarried sister-in-law Olga Zenske (42 - ) Iowa/Pomerania/Pomerania).

For the next 10 years Andrew remains in Lyons: The 1930 Federal Census for Lyons, Cook Co., Illinois, District 2187, page 269B, dated May 10, 1930 records Andrew (58 - IL/Scotland/Scotland) and Emma (54 - Iowa/Germany/Germany) Gairns (indexed as Gaims at ancestry.com) with their daughter Treasure L. (21 - Utah/IL/Iowa) living at 344 South 5th Avenue. Andrew's employment appears to be District Manager at a Foundry and he has been married to Emma for 30 years.

bullet  Research Notes:

An email dated Nov 18, 2009:
Hello Bo & Mary Lou:
I was browsing the internet last night and came across The Ancestors and Family of Bo & Mary Lou Adkins Hagen where the name William Gairns & Catherine MCurrie appeared.
My name is Roberta Doyle (nee Gairns) and I am working on the Gairns family history and while the William Gairns shown in your file is not directly my line, I have some Gairns' that are. The Cedar Rapids Iowa and Illinois connections have me pretty excited.
I do have William's line from Scotland and would be glad to send it to you. I am particularly interested in Andrew Gairns - son of William and Kate McCurrey. You do not show a marriage - could it be that he married a lady named Emma Zemke and had two children, William Otto and Treasure Louis?
William Otto Gairns married Nina Katherine Wilbur ( I believe New York) and they had two children: William Otto and Robert Andrew Gairns. Over the past few years, I have been talking with Robert Andrew and he provided me with the Andrew/Zemke connection - he also mentioned the Smiths & Goughs so I know I am on the right track.
I also have a "stray" - Alexander S. Gairns who married Annie F.Miller, Cook Co Illinois Nov 2 1881 - Marriage Lic #0057155 - I have not yet sent away for a copy of this marriage to determine Alexander's parentage and I do not use Ancestry.Com ( can't afford it) but I do feel he is connected somehow to William & Kate McCurrie as they all seemed to be in Cook Co Illinois at some time.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Roberta Doyle
