bullet  General Notes:

See general notes on his son, John Bolton Smith, for census facts.

Researching census records indicate that John's parents were Alexander and Lucy Smith of Mecklenburg. It is known that John's youngest son was named Langston Smith and that given name is used to name a son of Robert Smith as recorded in the 1880 census. Robert is living with Alexander Smith that year and when census records are checked one finds that both Robert and John are sons of Alexander and Lucy Smith. The census documentation for this is as follows:
A) The 1880 Federal Census for Christiansville District, Mecklenburg Co., VA, District 144, page 119A taken June 11, 1880 records Bolton Smith (11) living with his parents John J. (40) and Lucy J. (30) Smith and siblings Bernard (12), Lizzie F. (9), Mary L. (7), Thomas W. (5), and Langston A. (2).
B) The 1880 Federal Census for Mecklenburg Co., VA, District 144, page 120A records Robert (42) and Cora (26) Smith with children Malcum (5), Archer (4), Langston (2), and Lucy (6/12 - December) living with Alexander (74) and Lucy (56) Smith.
C) The 1870 Federal Census for Christiansville, Mecklenburg Co., VA, page 330A records John J. (30) and Lucy (22) Smith with children Eusebius B. [Bernard] (4), John C. B. (3), and Elizabeth F. (1).
D) The 1870 Federal Census for Christiansville, Mecklenburg Co., VA, page 326A records Alexander (65) and Lucy A. (48) Smith with son Robert A. Smith (32). Also in the household is Alexander's sister, Martha Smith (72). Alexander is a farmer and has real estate valued at $10,000 and personal property at $800.
E) The 1860 Federal Census for Regiment# 22, Mecklenburg Co., VA, Clarksville P.O., page 31 records Alex Smith (5) [recorded age 5 but obviously a mistake and should be 55] with his wife Sarah (51) and children Robt (21), John (20), Wm (18), Elzh (sic - Elizabeth) (16). Also in the household is Martha Smith (60). Alex is a farmer with real estate valued at $6,400 and a personal estate at $18,138 including 15 slaves.
F) The 1850 Federal Census for Regiment# 22, Mecklenburg Co., VA, page 119B records Alexander Smith (45) with his wife Sarah (41) and children Robt (12), John (10), William (8), Elizabeth (6). Alexander is a farmer with real estate valued at $3,500. The 1850 slave schedule records Alexander Smith with 13 slaves.
