The 1870 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA, Subdivision North of the Dan River, Chatham P. O., page 395A records John H. (46) and Ann G. (45) Motley with children Samuel J. (17), John M. (16), James R. (15), Joel W. (14), Jordan D. (11), Daniel M. (10), David J. (8), and Sallie A. (5). Also in the household is Nancy A. Meadows (80), John's mother-in-law.
Also in 1870: The 1870 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA, Subdivision North of the Dan River, Chatham P. O., page 319A records Jane Madden (43) with children Stephen (20), Charles (18), Joseph (13), James (10), and John (8). These two records are of interest in that recently married Samuel Motley is not listed with is wife Augusta [Madden], and that Augusta is not listed in her mother's household. This is most likely an oversight by the census taker of both records, J. M. Cole. Also of interest is that next door to Jane Madden is William Doss (46) and his family and also Mary M. Doss (50) and Judy Doss (70). This implies that Judy Doss is Jane Doss' mother so ...

The 1860 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA, North District, Chatham P. O., page 283 records Stephen (70) and Judith (69) Doss with daughter Mary M. Doss (39). Also in the household is Ferdinand Doss (15). Stephen is a farmer with real estate valued $1,200 at and personal property at $400.
The 1850 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA, Northern District, page 200A records Stephen () and Judith (48) Doss with children Willaim (20), Catherine (19), and Mahala (18). Stephen is a farmer with real estate valued $488.

I have not found Jane Madden in the 1880 census record, however, the following children can be found in Pittyslvania Co. census records for that year:
Stephen Maddin (30) living with Richard and Elizabeth Parker.
L. Charles Madden (27) with wife W. Lettie Madden (24) and their 3 children.
John Madden (17 - brother-in-law) living with Samuel and Augusta Motley
All are farming.
There is a Joseph H. Madden (24) with wife F. A. Madden (32), farming in Cave Spring, Roanoke Co., VA.

Jane married James R. Madden on 20 Dec 1847 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. (James R. Madden was born circa 1818 in Virginia and died after 1860 in Pittsylvania Co., VA.)
