The 1860 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA, Southern District, page 24 records Augusta Maddin (sic) (11) living with her parents, James R. (42) and Jane (33) Maddin, and siblings Stephen (9), Charles (9), and Joseph (4) all born in Virginia. James is a Carpenter. Next door is her future husband Samuel J. Motley: The 1860 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA, Southern District, page 24 records Samuel J. Motley living with his parents, John H. (35) and Ann G. (35) Motley and siblings William (9), John M. (7), James R. (5), Joel W. (3), Jordan W. (1), and Daniel M. (3/12) all born in Virginia. Also in the household is Nancy Meadows (68), Samuel Motley's mother's mother. John is an Overseer.

The 1850 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA, Southern District, page 78A records Augustas A. Maddin (sic) (1) living with her parents, James R. (30) and Jane P. (22) Maddin and brother Stephen (3/12). James is a "Cab Workman". It is of interest that the census record indicates that Augustas is "male". In attempting to connect research on the Motley Family described above, it is noted that the 1850 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA, Southern District, page 121A records John H. (25) and Ann (25) Motley living in the home of Samuel (79 - VA) and Nancy (61 - VA) Meadows who are the parents of Ann. The son of John and Ann, Samuel J. Motley, will marry Augusta Madden inb 1869.
