The 1870 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA, Subdivision North of the Dan River, Chatham P. O., page 395A records John H. (46) and Ann G. (45) Motley with children Samuel J. (17), John M. (16), James R. (15), Joel W. (14), Jordan D. (11), Daniel M. (10), David J. (8), and Sallie A. (5). Also in the household is Nancy A. Meadows (80), John's mother-in-law.
Also in 1870: The 1870 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA, Subdivision North of the Dan River, Chatham P. O., page 319A records Jane Madden (43) with children Stephen (20), Charles (18), Joseph (13), James (10), and John (8). These two records are of interest in that recently married Samuel Motley is not listed with is wife Augusta [Madden], and that Augusta is not listed in her mother's household. This is most likely an oversight by the census taker of both records, J. M. Cole. Also of interest is that next door to Jane Madden is William Doss (46) and his family and also Mary M. Doss (50) and Judy Doss (70).

The 1900 United States Federal Census for Lockett District, Prince Edward Co., Virginia, District 79, page 213A records Samuel J. (Jan 1850) and Augusta (Oct 1848) Motley (indexed as Mattey at ancestry.com) with children Etta J. (Jan 1882) and Alfred A. (May 1885). Next door is son Charlie Motley (Apr 1873) with his wife Mary (Dec 1879) and children Leonard A. (Feb 1897) and Janora W. (Oct 1899). On the other side of Samuel is another son, Robert L. Motley (Feb 1870), with his new wife Emma (Dec 1881) living in the home of Emma's parents, Elisha (Nov 1845) and Nannie (Jan 1855) Powell. Robert and Emma have been married for 0 years; Samuel and Augusta have been married for 31 years; while Charlie and Mary have been married for 4 years. Samuel and Augusta have had 10 children of whom 7 are still living.

Note: ELISHA E. POWELL married NANCY C. RICE on 15 Dec 1870 in Pittsylvania Co., VA ... Elisha and Nancy are the parents of Robert L. Motley's wife, Emma Powell.


The 1910 United States Federal Census for Leigh District, Prince Edward Co., Virginia, District 5, page 225B, dated April 29, 1910 records Samuel J. (60) and Augusta A. (63) Motley living with their son Charlie E. Motley (37) with his wife Delila (30) and children Leonard A. (13), Geniva W. (10), Coy. L. (8), Ethel K. (6), Iola M. (3), and Maud E. (1) living along the Deatonville - Rice Road. Samuel and Augusta have been married for 40 yeaqrs and have had 10 children of whom 5 are still living while Charlie and Delila have been married for 14 years and have had 6 children all of whom are still living.

The 1920 United States Federal Census for Leigh District, Prince Edward Co., Virginia, District 5, page 243B, dated October 23, 1920 records Samuel J. (69) and Augusta A. (71) Motley living with George Franks (39) and his wife Elizabeth (36) and their children Katherine (14), Birdie (12), Elizabeth (10), Edward (8), Henry (6), Leroy (4), Raymond (2), and Herbert (4).

Samuel married Augusta Alabama Madden, daughter of James R. Madden and Jane P. Doss, on 25 Mar 1869 in Pittslvania Co., Virginia. (Augusta Alabama Madden was born in Oct 1848 in Pittsylvania Co, VA and died after 1920 in Leigh District, Prince Edward Co., Virginia.)
