He has completed 1 year of college and is employed as a Book Keeper for a Transportation concern earning $1,300 working 52 weeks during the last year. The 1920 Federal Census for Franklin, Southampton Co., VA, District 213, page 192B, dated January 9, 1920 records Roy Matthews (16 - VA) with his parents John B. Matthews (48 - NC/NC/NC) and Nannie P. Matthews (47 - VA/VA/NC) and siblings Fenton Matthews (19 - VA) and Virginia Matthews (16 - VA) living at 404 Second Avenue. John is a Book Keeper at a Feed Store while Fenton is a Clerk at the Post Office and Roy is a Salesman at a Drug Store.

Southampton-Sussex County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Obituaries JOHN BENJAMIN MATTHEWS John Benjamin Matthews died at his home in Second Avenue Wednesday morning, April 11, in the 57th year of his age. He had been a resident of our town for about 15 years and was know and esteemed as a quiet, unassuming Christian citizen. Mr. Matthews came to Franklin from Wakefield, Va., where he was employed for some time by Bain and Company of that town, and was with C.A. Cutchins and Sons here until 1922 when failing health prevented active work. He had been confined to his home for several weeks before his death. He is survived by his widow, who was Miss Nannie Barham, daughter of the late Henry T. and Mrs. Jennie Barham of Capron; by three sons, Leslie B. Matthews of Portsmouth, J. Fenton and Roy T. Matthews of Franklin; a daughter, Mrs. Walter C. Beaman of Norfolk; three brothers, Walter M. Matthews of Laurinburg, N.C., Emory J. Matthews of Charlotte, N.C., and C.C. Matthews of Yadkin College, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Walter L. Beale of Franklin and Mrs. Annie Pierce of Nansemond besides two grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were conducted from his late residence here yesterday afternoon by Dr. Geo. H. Spooner, Pastor of High Street M.E. Church, of which Mr. Matthews was a consistent communicant. Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the body bearers being: C.F. Whitfield, W.H. Norfleet, H.L. Westbrook, J.H. Boyd, G.H. Steinhardt, W.M. Weede, Jno. O. Haslett, and W.B. Simpson.

Southampton-Sussex County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Obituaries NANCY BARHAM MATTHEWS Mrs. Nancy Barham Matthews, 82, widow of John Benjamin Matthews and a former resident of Franklin, died late Wednesday evening, September 30, in a Norfolk hospital. The deceased was the daughter of the late Henry Thomas and Lucy Jane Harding Barham of Southampton County. A member of High Street Methodist Church, for the past several years she had made her home at Virginia Beach with her daughter, Virginia Matthews Beaman.* Besides her daughter, Mrs. Matthews is survived by three sons, Leslie B. Matthews of Norfolk and J. Fenton and Roy T. Matthews of Franklin; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock tomorrow (Friday) afternoon in the chapel of W.J.M. Holland & Sons, followed by burial in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Rev. James W. Turner, pastor of High Street Methodist Church, and Rev. Moultrie Guerry, D.D., rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Norfolk, will officiate. Active pallbearers will be Walter C.
