One could speculate that Mary went to live with her uncle Andrew Gehr (or relatives) after her mother's death ... the 1850 census records Andrew (b 1774) and Catherine (b 1782) Gehr a few pages over from Elizabeth Gehr (b 1789). Perhaps Andrew is the brother of Paul Gehr.
