The 1940 Federal Census for Portsmouth City, VA, District 116-34, page 129B, dated April 13, 1940 records Henley Doughtie (25 - VA) lodging at the home of Lalian Comstock (30 - VA) at 2002 County Street. Henley has completed 2 years of high school and is a Freight Handler for the Southern Railway earning $750 working 26 weeks during the last year. Also in the household are Lalian's daughter, Virginia Comstock (10 - NC) and her brother and sister, Paul Joyner (? - VA) and Catherine Joyner (20 - VA).

The 1930 Federal Census for Roanoke Rapids, Halifax Co., NC, District 25, page 144A, dated April 2, 1930 records William E. Comstomck (sic) (21 - NC/NC/NC) with his wife of 1 year, Lala Comstock (19 - VA/VA/VA). William is a Laborer in a Bakery.

The City Directory and census record entries seem to indicate to this researcher that Henley was married to a Lala Joyner who was married to a William E. Comstock .... the name of Henley's wife was given to me as Loda Joyner Cobb.

Further research seems to indicate that Lala(?) was the daughter of Wiley Junious Joyner and Rosa Story of Southampton Co., VA: The 1910 Federal Census for Jerusalem, Southampton Co., VA records Wiley (39 - VA/VA/VA) and Rosa (28 - VA/VA/VA) Joyner with their son Keneth (5) and daughter Lalon (2) farming on Nottoway Chapel Road. Wiley and Rosa have been married for 6 years and have had 2 children.
The 1920 Federal Census for Franklin, Southampton Co., VA records Wily J. (48 - VA/VA/VA) and Rosa L. (38 - VA/VA/VA) Joyner with their children Kenny (14), Lazla (11), Helen (6), Katherine (3 11/12), Paul (6/12) and Pauline (6/12) farming on Smith Ferry Road. Wiley and Rosa have been married for 6 years and have had 2 children. Note: The siblings named in the 1940 census above are Paul and Catherine!
The 1930 Federal Census for Franklin, Southampton Co., VA records W. J. (59 - VA/VA/VA) and Rosa L. (47 - VA/VA/NC) Joyner with their children K. J. (25), Katherine (11), Paul (10) and Pauline (10) farming at 714 Hill Street [probably High Street].
