The 1910 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., Virginia, District 12, page 141A taken April 15, 1910 records Carlton (28) and Sarah M. (25) Doughtie with children Annie O. (4), Norfleet W. (2), and Margaret (6/12). Carlton is working in a Sawmill (probably his father's Mill). A few pages over in the census is his father, Bolden R. Doughtie and 2nd wife, Mary E., and son Luther Doughtie. Bolden is listed as a Lumberman with a Saw Mill.
The WWI Draft Registration Card for Wise Carlton Doughtie dated September 12, 1918 lists his date of birth as December 10, 1880. He is living with his wife Sarah M. Doughtie in Holland, (Nansemond, Co. / now Suffolk City) VA. and is self emplyed as a Lumberman. His physical description is medium height and build.
In 1930 the family is living on Railroad Street in Holland Town, Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., Virginia. The 1930 Federal Census for Holland Town, Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., VA, District 6, page 98B, dated April 3, 1930 records Wise C. (49) and Sarah M. (45) Doughtie with children Ann O. (24), Norfleet W. (22), Henley S. (16), Bolden R. (13), Thomas R. (11), and Cecil M. (10). Wise is a Sawyer in a Saw Mill and has been married for 25 years.
The 1940 Federal Census for Holland, Nansemond Co., VA, District 62-9, page 133B, dated April 4, 1940 records Wise C. (59) and Sarah M. (55) Doughtie with children Bolden R. (23), Thomas R. (21), and Cecil M. (16) living on the "street leading into Suffolk Road". Also in the household is Wise's widowed daughter Octavia D. Holland (34) and her daughter Margaret C. Holland (9). There are also 2 lodgers: Charles (71) and Lydia (69) Norfleet [brother & sister]. Wise is a Sawyer & Foreman in a Lumber/Saw Mill. The 1910 census shows these Norfleets with their father, Elisha, as neighbors of Bolden R. Doughtie, father of Wise Carlton Doughtie.
