The 1860 Federal Census for North District, Pittsylvania Co., VA, Museville P. O., page 181, dated July 6, 1860 records Abner Adkins (31) living with Matilda Donley (35) and Jabez DOnley (7) and William F. Donley (6). Abner is a farm laborer and neither he nor Miltda can read or write.

Abner enlisted in Co. I , 21st Virginia Infantry on June 29, 1861. Co. I was known as The Turkey Cock Grays due to the fact that most of the soldiers came from the Turkey Cock Mountain area of Henry/Pittsylvania Co., VA. He was wounded on May 3, 1863 at Chancellorsville, VA by a ball which shattered his jaw: tongue shortened and teeth knocked out with paralysis of chin. He was detailed on March 16, 1864 at Lynchburg, VA (Detailed as a hospital guard)
Abner deserted Company I, 21st Infantry Regiment Virginia on November 9, 1864. He returned to Pittsylvania Co., married and raised 3 children, and lived for many years in the Callands area of Pittyslvania Co.

Abner applied for a Confederate Soldiers Pension in May 1888 where he described his wounds and his physical condition that prevented him from eating properly and creating a weakened condition that prevented him from the performance of manual labor.
In 1997 he received for a disabled soldier's pension of $15 annually with the note "Facts certified do not indicate disablilty equal to that which would be caused by the loss of a hand."
In 1904 he received for a disabled soldier's pension of $30 annually due to "deafness and infirmities of old age" and he was nearly blind.

The 1880 Federal Census for Callands, Pittsylvania Co., Va., Dist 164, page 50B records Abner (51) and Tilly(47) Adkinds with children John C. (21) and Puss (20) next door to son William T. (20) adkinds and his wife Matilda (25) and their children Ada L. (3), Sidney (3), Mary (1), Lumser (3/12-March).

The 1900 Federal Census for Callands, Pittsylvania Co., Va., Dist 71, page 232A records the widower Abner Adkins (January 1830). Also in the household is his daughter, Fanny (Dec 1860), who recently married John Colbar (May 1865). Next door is Abner's son John Adkins (Dec 1860) with his wife Mary J. (May 1870) and their children Stonewall J. (Sept 1885), John G. (Jan 1888), Fannie F. (May 1891), Alma Feb 1893), Levi (April 1896), Fletcher L. (Jan 1898), and Susie (May 1900). A few pages over in the census record is Abner's son William Adkins (June 1857) with his wife Malinda A. [Matilda] (July 1849) with their children Ada L. (July 1868[78]), Mary J. (Mar 1881), Magdalene (June 1882), Mattie M (July 1887), William H. (Nov 1889).
