General Notes:
Clyde Fields Swain became schizophrenic and was hospitalized. She became a patient at the VA in Salem, VA where Ben Adkins and wife, Ruth Coleman Garrett (cousin to Clyde), came to visit. They sometimes took her to Danville for visits with family as well as for family dinners and visitation at their home in Roanoke, VA. One time during a visit at the Garrett home in Danville, Clyde became agitated and ran through the house to escape her "persecutors". No one tried to stop her as she broke free. Ben went after her and was able to calm her and returned with Clyde to the family gathering. Later in life, Clyde had a lobotomy in an effort to control her outbursts.
The 1940 Federal Census for Leaksville, Rockingham Co., NC, District 79-3, page 35B, dated June 8, 1940 records Clyde F. Swain (21 - SC) residing at a Hospital at 124 Henry Street.
