Research Notes:
From: Karen Clupper <kdclupper@hotmail.com> Subject: Hagen/Alexander/Brubaker families To: lhagen@vt.edu Date: Sept 2, 2008 Dear Bo,
I wanted to thank you and all others that have supplied the wonderful family research for all families mentioned above and making it public for all to share. It has already helped me so much and I have only just begun to scratch the surface. Before going any further, I will tell you the relationship:
My father, Edward Broadbent (my stepfather), is the gggrandson of Thomas Alexander and Hannah Hagen Alexander. His ggrandparents were George Alexander and Leah Rineer Alexander and his grandparents were Thomas Edward Alexander and Susan Hackman Alexander. Thomas Edward died quite young in a tragic accident in 1918 and George, of course, died of cancer in 1901 at the age of 60. However, Leah Alexander lived until 1950 and Thomas Edward's (Eddie) wife Susan lived until 1984. I initially researched the Broadbent family for my Pop, then went onto the Hackmans (with help from my uncle Larry), then the McFalls (very spread out family in Lancaster area), then Alexanders (also spread out) and now the Hagens and Brubakers. You have helped me so much, not only in dates and locations but in personal information as well, which I love. I hate the fact that so many of the entries are reduced to birth and death dates without stories behind them.
I thought I would share a few things with you, starting with one correction. The Benjamin Franklin Brubaker you mentioned as being married to Adaline Fisher is incorrect. As you can see from the biography of Rolandus Brubaker, Benjamin's brother, it says that Benjamin died in 1863 while serving in the army. It must have been Henry who was the father of Sheridan Brubaker who married Ida Hagen. I also found the burial location for Sheridan and Ida to be Chestnut Presbyterian in Drumore Township, Lancaster County, and that Ida died in 1923. See below:
ROLANDUS BRUBAKER, a most worthy representative of an old and honored family of Lancaster county, and an esteemed citizen of Martic township, was born in Providence township Jan. 27, 1827, son of John and Martha (Sides) Brubaker. John Brubaker, the father, was born in 1800, and died in 1855. He married Martha Sides, of another old family of the county, and they had ten children, nine of whom grew to maturity: George, of Lancaster; Rolandus; Barbara, deceased; John, of Martic township; Susan, wife of Thomas Lebozier, of Martic township; Henry, of Martic township; Benjamin (a twin brother of Henry), who died in 1863, in the army; Martha M., wife of David Kreider of Martic; and Fannie, wife of John Alexander.
If you don't mind, I will continue my research and if I can find anything that may help you, I will be glad to pass it on. As a fun note, I was in the mountains near Wellsboro, PA this past weekend and met Brad Hagen and thought immediately he must be some relation, which was confirmed in your research. I noted that Brad was married to a Susan Martin and while I did not meet her, I did meet her brother, Ron. You must understand that we are also related to the Martin family in that a Christian Hackman married an Elizabeth Martin but I am not sure where Susan and Ron Martin come into that relationship. On top of that, I noted that Brad's first wife was the daughter of Donald Harvey, who was a son of Robert and Elsie McFalls, another relative of ours. How crazy genealogy can be!
Thanks again for all your hard work!
Take care.
Karen Clupper
