Wife of Joseph Oakes (married November 27, 1930).

ROXBORO - Avis Kendrick Oakes, 90, of 66 Dee Long Rd., died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Person Memorial Hospital. Born in Pittsylvania Co., Va., she was the daughter of the late John H. and Mattie Adkins Kendrick and wife of the late Joseph Oakes. She was a member of Warren's Grove United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Oakes is survived by three sons, Earl C. Oakes of New London and Garland "Joe" Oakes and Lanny Oakes, both of Roxboro; one daughter, Ellen O. Whitfield of Chattanooga, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs Oakes was preceded in death by her daughter Irma Jean O. Pergerson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Susan Harthon. Burial will follow in Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation was held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her grandson, Mitch Pergerson, 2146 Thee Hester Rd.

Pallbearers were Steve Whitfield, Jason Oakes, Lewis Pergerson, Alex Pergerson, Barry Warren, and Wayne Wrenn.
