Walter Fabius Maximus Moring was born in 1842 at Dennisville in Amelia County. He was the son of William Wyatt Moring, and grandson of Caswell and Emily Moring. He served in "H" Company of the 44th Virginia Infantry of Amelia County, Virginia. Throughout the war, he kept an in-depth journal of his daily activities and experiences that gives us an incredible view of the life of a Confederate soldier. After the war, he became a successful lumber and coal merchant between Baltimore and Chicago. He died at a relatively young age, in his forties, and is buried in Chicago, Illinois.

The 1870 Federal Census for Baltimore City, 9th Ward, Maryland, page 402B, dated July 1, 1870 records Walter Morring (sic) (27 - VA) living in what appears to be a boarding house or hotel occupied by some 50 people. Walter is a "Clerk Life Ins Co".

The 1880 Federal Census for Baltimore City, 16th Ward, Maryland, page 196A, dated June 1, 1880 records W. C. Moring (34 - VA/VA/VA/VA) with his wife S. B. Moring (31 - VA/VA/VA), son J. W. Moring (5 - Maryland/VA/VA), and daughters M. L. Moring (2 - Maryland/VA/VA) and M. T. Moring (6/12 - Oct - Maryland/VA/VA) living at 70 Green Street. Walter is in the "Commission Business".
