Emma R. McGowan is listed as a sister in the 1903 obituary for her brother, Charles A. Helms.

The 1900 U.S. Census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ward 24, (ED# 562, page 147A, dated June 5, 1900) records James A. (Feb 1865 - PA/PA/PA) and Emma R. (Feb 1870 - PA/PA/PA) with their daughters Carrie (Jan 1892) and Hazel B. (Nov 1893) living at 4024 Haverford Ave. James is employed as a Mailman. Interesting to note that the address is the same as listed as the place of death for her brother who died in 1903.

The 1910 U.S. Census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ward 24, (ED# 514, page 42A, dated April 19, 1910) records James A. (40 - PA/PA/PA) and Emma R. (37 - PA/PA/PA) with their daughters Carrie L. (18) and Hazel B. (16) and son William E. (2) living at 4024 Haverford Ave. James is employed as a Furniture Upholsterer and has been married to Emma for 20 years. They have had 3 children. Also in the household are two lodgers: Margaret Killinger (32) and Lewis R. Smith (57) ... they appear to be married in that they both list having been married for 11 years and this is the first marriage for Margaret and second for Lewis.

Emma married James A. McGowan in 1889 in Philadelphia, PA. (James A. McGowan was born on 23 Feb 1865 in Pennsylvania, died on 12 Oct 1910 in Philadelphia, PA and was buried on 15 Oct 1910 in Fernwood Cemetery, Delaware County, Pennsylvania.) The cause of his death was Uraemia (sic) / Nephritis.
