The 1850 Federal Census for Northampton Co., NC records Samuel (49) and Parthena (46 - NC) Gatling with children Jethro (19), Andrew S. (18), Euclid B. (15), and Joseph (10).
Thus it appears that Parthena Britt actually married a Samuel Gatling and moved to Northampton Co., NC. Not only does Joseph Gatling's death certificate indicate his birth as Hertford Co., NC but the 1840 census records Samuel Gatling with 5 sons, no daughters, and a wife.
